We have spoken in the past how the NSW Opal electronic ticketing system has been slowly introduced into the Sydney Public Trains and buses ticketing system. After this successful introduction the paper tickets were still to be sold for a few years as other world-wide Transport authorities do, do ease the burden of complaints and making it easy for commuters to get used too.
In August 2014, I spoke about 14 Paper tickets being phased out of circulation and how "Opal tickets" were being introduced in our area. The Opal Cards are more accessible to obtain and more easily topped up, since then.
As from 1st August 2016, all 'Paper tickets" will be out of circulation, not sold and that will present some difficulties to some public transport commuters. I personally suggest that if you know a commuter that doesn't have an Opal card ticket and they use 'Paper Tickets' - tap them on the shoulder and tell them what you know, in how they can obtain the Opal Card and explain them how it works so that if and when they use public transport on or after 1st August 2016, they understand and are prepared to use it.
There are many benefits using Opal Cards for the individual commuter: easier use by not carrying cash to pay for fares, for bus drivers, trips can be shortened with 'Tap and Go' and for NSW Public Transport Future Planners, the actual trip journey are recorded to see where there are growth in public transport journey in any area in Sydney. This will then allow for making decision of increased bus/ trains services at certain times on Sydney trains and buses.
