As from 1st September 2014, a few paper tickets will be om removed from NSW for Transport, making these cards non-existent for commuters to purchase.
I have had numerous attempts to have an Opal Card opened and then issued to myself because I didn't have a debit card/master card. I have finaly found a solution for this, after speaking to an operator this morning. Which was never suggested to myself before. It was obtaining a Prepaid Debit Card from Australia Post, depositing $40.00 (as well as the set up charge from Australia Post), and then contact Opal to have your Opal Card issued.
The Opal Card new electronic ticketing is expanding to buses very shortly, the problem here is that the elderly members of our community will find it difficult to understand it operates. basically it is pay as you go, when and where you go.
The main issue is when you receive it, you will need to initiate the Opal Card, before using it. Then, the most important thing to do is to 'tap in' and 'tap out' on one of the Opal Card electronic readers at any train station barrier or entrances to platforms. Tapping involves facing the Opal Card direct onto the Opal Electronic Reader a leaving it there for one to two seconds, listening for the 'beep' that confirms, start of trip and end of trip. At end of trip, will show you balance left on your Opal Account and the fare of the journey just completed.
Opal Cards can be topped up at all Seven Eleven Stores, negotiations are with Major Coles and Woolworth stores and also soon to be at Sydney train stations ticketing offices.
Bus commuters may forget to 'Tap Off' the buses, as up until now, bus commuters, purchase tickets directly with the bus driver or pre-purchase weekly, monthly and yearly at train stations! 'Tapping on' will be easy for bus commuters.
If there is any issues with any Opal Electronic Readers or being overcharged, at first instance notify Opal. If you lose you Opal
Card and you are being checked for your ticket - they can check with Opal.
