A blood donor campaign by Blacktown City Council has topped the nation for recruiting the most new donors.
The annual Red25 Council Blood Challenge is run by the Australian Red Cross Blood Service and encourages staff and residents from local councils to donate blood between July and September.
Blacktown City Council came third for the total number of donors, but blitzed the field for recruiting first time donors, with 31 new donors.
“I’m proud to say that 87 people who live and work in Blacktown City donated during the challenge this year, saving a total of 261 lives” the Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Stephen Bali said.
Blacktown placed third in the NSW Councils Blood Challenge, behind Tamworth Regional Council’s 224 and Lismore City Council’s 101.
“Significantly, we also topped the country for the highest number of new donors.
“This means our campaign did more than any other to change the way people think about blood donation and this will have a lasting benefit for Red Cross blood supplies.
“It’s an outstanding result and I thank not only those who donated, but especially the staff team that ran the blood donation campaign.
“You truly made a difference.”
Mayor Bali, who donated at the Blacktown blood donor van in July, said that, according to Red Cross, every person who donated potentially saved three lives in the process.
Council held an afternoon tea on Tuesday 24 October to thank the staff who donated as part of the blood challenge.
“It’s so important that we as a community help each other and donating blood is an easy way to do this,” he said.
“Although the Red25 blood challenge is over for another year I encourage everyone to continue the good work and keep donating.”
Mayor of Blacktown City Stephen Bali, Blacktown Council’s Red25 Blood Challenge Coordinator Bryce Quigley and Red Cross Community Relations Officer Ronny Maroun celebrate the Council’s success.
