The latest sporting ground to be upgraded by Council – Doonside’s Bert Saunders Reserve – was officially unveiled on Sunday.

The $4 million worth of upgrades were welcomed by St Patrick’s Soccer Club, which has made the ground its permanent home.

St Pat’s Soccer Club president Keiran Pender said the club was very happy with the new amenities.
“It’s a big improvement on what we had before,” he said.

“But what we are most impressed with his how Council and Mayor Stephen Bali handled the situation.

“They actually took the time to listen and did it with great respect.

“Stephen Bali showed he had a genuine desire to make Bert Saunders Reserve better, not only for St Pat’s but the whole community.”

The sports field was jointly unveiled by Mr Pender, the Mayor of Blacktown City Councillor Stephen Bali, and St Patrick’s Club Secretary Silvana Martignago.

“At the heart of the new works is a $1 million amenities building – housing a meeting room, change rooms, store rooms, canteen and toilets,” Mayor Bali said.

“Council has also upgraded the playing fields, installed fencing, improved the lighting and built a new car park.

“None of this would be possible without the St Pat’s Soccer Club members who helped Council with the design, location and construction of the amenities block.

“It is a community club, and I thank St Pat’s for working with Council to ensure we created the best building possible.

“I particularly want to thank President Pender and Secretary Silvana Martignago for all their help and support.”

The opening of the new reserve coincided with the St Patrick’s Soccer Club trophy presentation day.
Club members, family and friends enjoyed a free barbecue, jumping castles, face painting and games.
Mayor Bali said Bert Saunders is one of many sports fields and reserves Council is upgrading across Blacktown City.

“Blacktown prides itself on being an active and sporting city, which is why we are investing millions of dollars to improve sports fields, parks and playgrounds,” he said.

“Just last month Council opened two new playgrounds, at Kings Langley and Parklea, and we are currently working on designing a $5 million international-standard soccer facility at Popendetta Park.”
The new amenities building and field upgrades are part of Council’s master plan for Bert Saunders Reserve. Playground design works are in progress.

Future works could include additional landscaping and a car park extension.
