For Brian Elliot being a volunteer at the Blacktown City Plant Nursery is more than just having a green thumb, its about helping others in his community.
Mr Elliot from the Lethbridge Park is one of about 300 volunteers who work in Blacktown City Council venues, including the nursery, parks and libraries across the City.
Mayor of Blacktown City Stephen Bali said volunteers were an integral part of Blacktown City.
Our Council volunteers are important because they help staff enhance the services provided to the community,” he said.
They care for abandoned and sick animals, keep local parks clean, teach computer skills and provide reception support at the Blacktown Arts Centre, just to give a few examples.
Put simply, Blacktown wouldn’t be the same without them.
“There are hundreds of people who volunteer at local sporting clubs, community groups, hospitals and schools across our city”
National Volunteer Week is from 21-27 May – an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contributions of volunteers.
The theme this year is Give a Little, Change a Lot, a reference to the millions of volunteers who make a significant impact in their communities by giving a little time.
Mr Elliot said he has been a volunteer for over 10 years and has no plans of stopping.
“I’m enjoying every moment of being a volunteer,” Mr Elliot said. “It’s healthy, mentally and physically, it keeps your mind active.
“It’s great to be able to give a lot back to the community, you pass on the information that you learn to others.
Mayor Bali said Volunteer Week was an ideal time to thank volunteers for their contribution to the community.
We are fortunate to have many volunteers across Council who are committed to making their local area the best it can be.
On behalf of the City and Council, I thank them for their dedication, enthusiasm and contribution to our community.
