The annual “pouring of the fish” as the pool is stocked with some 800 trout.

Held over two weekends, the 25th Blacktown Council Family Fish-in is again a sell out and several hundred fishers have booked their slots at Mount Druitt Swimming Centre, which has become a fishing centre for the next two weekends.

“All sessions have been filled and we are looking forward to seeing lots of people having lots of fun together, said the Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Stephen Bali.

“At one stage, Council wanted to close the Mount Druitt Swimming Centre, but then there was a change on mind and I am proud to be the Mayor who fought to keep the centre open,” he said.

“For 25 years people have been coming to the pool to fish – it’s a really quirky idea that has kept going and going,” he said.

Although all sessions over the next two weekends are fully booked for fishing, spectators are welcome and entry to the pool is free.

“There are 600 fishing spots around the pool across the two weekends, and this year they were all taken within a fortnight of bookings opening.

“There are grandchildren there who are being taught how to fish by grandparents who were taught how to fish at the Fish-In.”

“Those booked in for the second week should not worry about the pool being fished out.

“Another 400 Salmon Trout will be leaving the mountain waters of Sandy Waterfall Creek, on the Goobragandra River just outside of Tumut, to be added to the waters of Mount Druitt Swimming Centre, next Thursday.

The Fish In runs from 5pm to 8.30pm on the next two Friday and Saturday nights (August 4, 5, 11 and 12).

There are heaps of prizes to be given away each session including the major prize – a Family Fishing Adventure in any location of your choice within NSW.

Friendly volunteers from NSW Fisheries will also be present at each session to answer your fish enquiries and to give advice and information.

This event is proceeding under a permit from NSW Department of Primary Industries.

Blacktown City Council - Media Alert - "Incinerator Inquiry"

Blacktown City Council has successfully lobbied for a parliamentary inquiry into the Energy from Waste industry.

The Dial a Dump group has applied to build one of the world’s largest Energy from Waste facilities at Eastern Creek.

The proposed waste incinerator would generate electricity by burning some 1.105 million tonnes of waste a year.

There is strong opposition to the project from surrounding residents and Blacktown City Council is opposed to the proposal, which we do not think should be approved by the NSW Government.

On Tuesday June 27, Mayor Stephen Bali and representatives of the company wanting to build the EfW plant will be giving evidence at a hearing to be held at Rooty Hill RSL from 9.00 am.

Dial a Dump will be giving their evidence at 11am, Mayor Bali will be giving his at 12.00pm and we will be calling a media conference for 12.45pm.

“There are several schools within reach of the incinerator’s emission plume, and parents have rightly told Council they are worried about the health of their children,” said the Mayor of Blacktown City, Stephen Bali.

Mayor Bali has previously made the point that, according to the proposal, the cooling system used at the plant cuts out when the temperature gets above 37 degrees, causing the entire plant to “trip” or shut down. 

“If the plant had been operating this year, it would have shut down on at least 11 days,” Mayor Bali said at the time.

Mayor Bali said:  “This is their second go, and the company wanting to burn more than a million tonnes of waste a year is yet to come up with a plan that provides maximum protection for the hundreds of thousands of people living around it.”

The proposed plant would be located near the Light Horse interchange of the M4 and M7 motorways at Eastern Creek, adjacent to the suburbs of Minchinbury, Colyton, Rooty Hill, Mount Druitt, Oxley Park, Erskine Park and Arndell Park.

“The politics of poverty porn have once again enveloped Blacktown,” the Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Stephen Bali said.

“The heartless vilification of Blacktown’s disadvantaged residents does nothing to resolve the core issue of non-compliance for job seeking requirements.

“I totally support moves to crack down on welfare fraud and cheating, but what’s achieved by demonising an entire city of 358,000 people by highlighting the bad behaviour of 333?

“Even when the Blacktown postcode’s population of 43,374 is taken into account, that is still only 0.7 per cent of the population - which is similar to all the other suburbs listed in the table.

“I am angry because an important issue such as ensuring people get a suitable job has been overshadowed by the vilification of the hard working people of Blacktown.

“Holding up the dispossessed and incapable to public ridicule does not solve the problem of people not turning up to interviews.

“We support moves by the federal government to improve their processes and would have greatly preferred they came to see us to find a local solution to a local problem,” Mayor Bali said.

“I invite Minister Tudge to Blacktown City to speak to community leaders and job seekers to discuss the best ways in addressing the problems.

Blacktown City Council Media Alert - Blacktown's Heart Starter

MEDIA ALERT

Blacktown City Council has become the first council in NSW to place a defibrillator in every sporting venue across the council’s area.

Under the plan, 101 defibrillators will be rolled out across the council’s sporting facilities.

The $252,000 project is underwritten by Blacktown City Council with contributions rolling in from local MPs Ed Husic, Michelle Rowland and Edmond Atalla as well as sporting groups.

Mayor Stephen Bali will be announcing the initiative at 4pm on Friday June 2 at Charlie Bali Reserve, Knox Road Doonside.
