In Australia, you need to reach 50% or more to be elected in primary votes, in the first round of votes. Votes are eliminated, once votes are exhausted. Then all the minor candidates are eliminated, but their preferences count towards the left over two leading candidates.
Now my question here is , is the candidate elected, first past the post? Let's say candidate A had 25,000 votes but need 3,000 to win on primary votes, Yet Candidate B had 21,500 votes and candidate C had 7,000 votes and Candidate D 2,500 votes. Now with the second preferences of Candidate C & D are eliminated, out of Candidate C & D 2nd preferences of 6,700 votes going to Candidate B raising total to 28,200 votes & 2,800 to Candidate A raising total 27,800 thus Candidate B is elected.
Well in my books, I thought the first that has a majority wins, in the primary count (when I was young). So, in Australia you can have the biggest primary votes and if you don't reach 50% or more of total votes, you may lose the election....
We don't vote for Prime Ministers in Chifley Federal Electorate but maybe the candidate you elect, could make a decision to choose one of the bellow candidates for Prime Minister of Australia
