Characters from Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland will to life this summer at the inaugural Blacktown International Sand Sculpting Exhibition.

More than 250 tonnes of sand will be trucked to the Blacktown Showground for the exhibition, which runs from 13-28 January.

Mayor of Blacktown City Stephen Bali MP said he was thrilled Council was hosting the exhibition in partnership with Sandstorm Events.

“This special event has found the perfect venue in the Blacktown Showground, and we think thousands of residents and visitors will be amazed by the sculptures,” Mayor Bali said.

“Art and culture has always had a central role to play in Blacktown, and I am proud that we are able to present this popular emerging art form right in the heart of Blacktown City.”

Characters including the Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts and the Chesire Cat will be on display.

There will also be fun activities and sand sculpting workshops for children.

Sandstorm Events Director Sharon Redmond encouraged people to attend the pre-event opening from 10-12 January and see the sandy sculptures take shape.

“A group of 10 international and Australian artists will soon start moulding the sand into large-scale, intricate sculptures in preparation for the exhibition opening on 13 January,” Ms Redmond said.

“This will be a sight to see and I’m sure visitors will be blown away by the detail and skill in each of the art works.”

The Blacktown International Sand Sculpting Exhibition runs from 13-28 January at Blacktown Showground.
