More than 300 people gathered to celebrate the festive season at the Blacktown City Seniors Christmas Luncheon at Bowman Hall on Wednesday, 29 November.
The celebration was organised by the Blacktown City Rotary and Inner Wheel clubs, and supported by Blacktown City Council.
Guests from various aged care homes across the city enjoyed entertainment by popular rock band Leather and Lace.
Dance students from Mitchell High School also performed.
Event organiser Ellen Long said the Blacktown City Seniors Christmas Lunch had been running for 25 years.
“Many years ago I decided to organise a Christmas party for all the ladies and gentlemen who live in local nursing homes,” she said.
“The event has grown and grown into what it is today.
“Every year it gives so much pleasure to so many people, and that is so important.”
Mayor of Blacktown City Stephen Bali MP said he was honoured to meet guests, including former Member for Greenway, Frank Mossfield, and centenarian Erna Schweiberer.
Ms Schweiberer, from St Hedwig Village in Blacktown, will celebrate her 103rd birthday on Thursday, 7 December.
She was born in Zurich in 1914, the same year war broke out in Europe, and lived in London and Wales before migrating to Australia in 1974.
Mayor Bali said he was thrilled to wish Mrs Schweiberer an early happy birthday at the seniors Christmas party.
“I had a fantastic time celebrating the festive season with Blacktown seniors such as Erna,” Mayor Bali said.
“I congratulate Ellen Long and all the volunteers who helped make the day a big success.
“Blacktown seniors are a vital part of our community and it is people like Ellen who make the City the great place that it is.”
