More than 250 tonnes of sand will bring characters from Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland to life this summer at the inaugural Blacktown International Sand Sculpting Exhibition.

Mayor of Blacktown City Stephen Bali MP said he was thrilled Council was hosting the exhibition in partnership with Sandstorm Events from the 13th to the 28th of January at Blacktown Showgrounds.

“This special event has found the perfect venue in the Blacktown Showground, and we think thousands of residents and visitors will be amazed by the sculptures,” Mayor Bali said.

“Art and culture has always had a central role to play in Blacktown, and I am proud that we are able to present this popular emerging art form right in the heart of Blacktown City.”

Tickets for the event are now on sale and artists will soon begin creating the sculptures ready for the opening on 13 January.

Sandstorm Events Director Sharon Redmond encouraged people to attend the pre-event opening from 10-12 January and see the sculptors at work.

“More than 250 tonnes of sand will be trucked to the Blacktown Showground site in boxes in early January,” Ms Redmond said.

“A group of 10 international and Australian artists will then start shaping this sand into large-scale, intricate sculptures in preparation for the exhibition opening on 13 January.

“This will be a sight to see and I’m sure visitors will be blown away by the detail and skill in each of the sand sculptures.”
