If There Is An Incident In Westfield Mount Druitt - Where Are The Evacuation Assembly Points For Shoppers!

Yes, more issues have arise from Workplace Health And Safety incidents, especially if it happens in the future at Westfield Mount Druitt. We need to refer to the recent incident that has occurred, then understand how it went and what should have occurred:

These are simple and part of Workplace Health and Safety Acts and Regulations. There is no stipulated evacuation assembly areas/points all around Westfield Mount Druitt that I could see. That is, there is no designated areas where both employees of Westfield, their tenants, employees of tenants and shoppers of Mount Druitt will know where to go, in case of an emergency evacuation.

Another issue that may not please the regulators of the Workplace Health and Safety Act is to question if there are regular practice runs of emergency plans undertaken, assessed and reviewed under the Work Cover Code of Practice, Managing the work, environment and facilities Click here and check Page 33 ,during operational hours.  What this means (which can be disturbing to business and shoppers), is regular practice runs of Fire Emergency Plans. I never hear from anyone that this is being done during normal shopping hours. That is when it should occur!

Some people may  think it is a lot of demands placed on Westfield Mount Druitt, but what would be said if there was an actual incident where this Emergency Plan is placed into operation and no one knew what to do or one part of the plan was not covered, which resulted in accidents and loss of life?

Hole In The Fence Mount Druitt Bus Interchange!

Yesterday, I noticed that Mount Druitt bus interchange has a hole in the fence again, which needs to be addressed, time and time again. Although it is not as big as previously reported (with other hole in the fences), it is still important to ensure that all community infrastructure is well maintained.

We can say this responsibility is left with our State Member  of Mount Druitt, Councillor Edmond Atalla as he cannot be everywhere at the same time. He is a community advocate himself and stands up for important issues within our community. There's lots of parliamentary documents to read also understand and then there's press releases for good stories for the area. Responsibility is on all of us to raise these issues to the relevant authorities.

So people of our community should not be shy and raise this small  or larger issues  for community improvements, which definitely fits in the larger picture of making Mount Druitt a better to live in. I'm sure this matter will be attended too as quick as possible.

Patchworked Ceiling Westfield Mount Druitt After Storm!

They have done an amazing thing to cover the ceiling that was exposed due to the ceiling collapse last week Click here for previous blog

As a temporary measure they are  placed a see through patch work on the ceiling that collapsed and it seemed that initial hole from the ceiling has increased. It does appear that if you didn't know that the ceiling had collapsed in Westfield and you are walking in that area you would end up oblivious to it. This is good temporary measure, they now have to proceed with follow suggestion made here on previous blog . To resolve issues of concern! Then, they can look at restoring the ceiling!

There Is A MECA Organisation In Our Mount Druitt Community!

It is not the Mecca you may know about, it is Mount Druitt Ethnic Communities Agency, helping the  people that have little or limited amount of English education or dealings with community business and non-government service providers.

Why have I  brought this up to the community is we all do not know who to refer a new person living in our community that needs this type of assistance and it is by show of community awareness that it is raised today. We need to help new people in our community not place them aside and that is where I met Ibrahim a young man migrating from Iraq as a refugee three years ago, who now is a volunteer with them helping other new Australians.

Issues That Need To Be Looked At - Incident At Westfield Mount Druitt Falling Ceiling!

Whilst we thank everyone that helped the people within our community, restore their lives, houses, clear streets and electrical power, it is in these times that we have to reflect as to whether there was anything that could have been done better, in any way possible.
 
In respect to the response from Emergency Services - no issues all perfectly controlled and responded too.

In relation to incident at Westfield Mount Druitt, there are four issues I have noticed about this, which I think should have been done at the time  by Westfield Management.

1. The Emergency Exit was locked at the Woolworths Entrance,

   as the automatic doors were not opening and a customer was trying to open the door. This door should have allowed access to outside the  Westfield Mount Druitt Shopping complex. ( I hope other Emergency Exists were not the same)
2. As soon as the ceiling collapsed above the Tele Choice store, the whole of Westfield Mount Druitt Shopping complex should have been closed as it was slippery and potential accidents to workers and contractors was at risk under the Work Health and Safety Act and Regulations. Only Woolworths closed their shop as they considered there were potential risks for their workers and customers.
3.  Although the area was cordoned of immediate danger to shoppers, this blocked shoppers access and this left shoppers lost - no one was instructing shoppers what to do? Shoppers should have been evacuated, especially as Woolworths had closed their business it was a potential accident risk to shoppers. 
4. There was no PA announcement across the Westfield Mount Druitt  informing of potential spill/fall accidents where this incident was or an announcement to close the shopping complex. 

I do hope that stake holders report this incident to Safework NSW and receive a report from Westfield Management on why these procedures had not taken place. In previous blogs I have advised Westfield Mount Druitt of leaking ceilings in the past that needed proper investigation. It appears that this issue has not been looked at and/or prevented so far. If these issues are neglected, further incidents still occur and may result to a most higher risk towards Work Health and Safety to occur. What now needs to be done is engineer inspections on the roofs and ceilings locating the reason why the roofs and ceilings are leaking and putting physical resolutions into practice - rather than possibly ignoring these important blogs copies they receive!

I'm sure our State Member for Mount Druitt, Councillor Edmond Atalla would be able to follow this up, as his electoral office is in the Westfield Shopping complex - I wouldn't want his office to leak or ceilings to fall there ... and I'm sure he has mutual feelings!

We Also Thank Blacktown City Council Trucks Picking Up Trees/Branchs Debris, After The Storm!

With the recent storms that has covered the inner hub of North Mount Druitt, Whalan, Dharruk, Hebersham and Rooty Hill, I have recently seen Blacktown City Council Trucks carting loose tree and branch debris lying on footpaths, clearing the way for pedestrians.

So, as I have thanked Emergency Services on a previous blog, I omitted to thank Blacktown City Council for supplying these trucks to help the community to get back on its feet. Thank you, "Mayor, Councillor Stephen Bali, Deputy Mayor Councillor Jacqueline Donaldson and their team of other Councillors!" Without this it would have been more days on end before it would have been all completed. 

Yet, there are still trees lying on park grounds, branches loose on front lawns and as I noticed in from of Mount Druitt Hospital that there was a huge uplifted Gum tree laying on the footpath waiting to be cleared (as I have seen around the neighbourhood today). The Council trucks will come to great use until all is finally completed. The community can then recognise the "Mount Druitt" community as we know it!

We Must Thank All Emergency Services: Police, SES and Fire Services For Their Assistance In Clearing Roads, Parks And Homes!

I take this opportunity on behalf of everyone from all over Mount Druitt and affected suburbs, to provide thanks to the Emergency Police, SES and Fire Services for clearing roads, parks, houses, proper traffic management, street closures where and in organising  through Integral Energy providing electricity.

 

For a short time yesterday, power lines had dropped and fallen on roads and parks cutting off power. Most of the power has been
restored within our community, most branches and uplifted trees have been cleared or placed aside on foot paths. As our community is getting over the shock of loss of houses, finding another accommodation, loss of brick/timber/Colorbond fencing, we are  so luckily a lot trees that had fallen on properties or cars at Westfield Mount Druitt, ending with no fatalities.

These emergency services personal have restored our Mount Druitt community and place to where it should be. We are proud of the men and women that that provided such great service to our community. It makes me proud to be Australian.
