Blacktown City Council Media Release - Free Workshops To Make Healthy Normal
MEDIA RELEASE
|
22 June 2017
Blacktown City’s library goers are being encouraged to ‘Make Healthy Normal’ at free health workshops at Blacktown City Libraries this July.
The innovative program is a partnership between Blacktown City Council and Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) designed to spread the ‘Make Healthy Normal’ campaign message.
The workshops cover a broad range of subjects including diabetes and obesity awareness (in several languages), healthy eating and how to stop smoking.
“Unfortunately, we live in an environment where it is too easy to be unhealthy,” Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Stephen Bali said.
“We want to make healthy normal,” he said, “because more than half the people in Western Sydney are overweight or obese.
“But it’s never too late to make a change and small changes can make a big difference.
“That’s why we are partnering with the local health district to ensure our residents have all the tools they need to make healthy normal again.”
The free workshops are part of the Make Healthy Normal Campaign, a NSW Government initiative that includes a fruit and veg sense class with tips to entice fussy eaters.
“My baby is very fussy, so it can be challenging,” she said.
“I just try and make sure he has a healthy diet with foods like meat, dairy and protein.”
The campaign includes free health talks and personal telephone health coaches at Western Sydney libraries.
WSLHD Centre for Population Health deputy director Christine Newman said library visitors would be encouraged to sign up to the free healthy coaching service before sitting down with a new novel.
“Libraries are an important community hub and resource to reach the local community - we’re expecting about 370,000 people to come through their doors in July alone,” she said.
“We’re delighted to be partnering with these libraries to help reach members of the community regarding Make Healthy Normal services, like the Get Healthy telephone coaching, that might help them,” Ms Newman said.

Charity From Former Whalan Children Given To Parents - Who Says Mount Druitt Children Don't Care!
For many years I had been traveling on a Busways 755 bus from Whalan to Mount Druitt. There was a wonderful person that I called, 'Peter the Painter'. His voice being loud, carried throughout the bus when he spoke. He wanted to be known. This is a true story that I am so proud to tell you. It shows you that children within Mount Druitt have got true heart or their parents. I wonder if you would do this, if your parents needed assistance?
Peter and I shared many conversations on the bus and also on Sydney Trains traveling to and from work: stories were told, we comforted each other and we consoled ourselves when our rugby league football teams lost (especially if our teams played against each other).
As a West Sydney Tigers supporter, Peter said. 'When they lost they didn't eat the right pussy cat food or didn't eat enough of it!' With myself being a South Sydney bunnies support, my response was if my team lost, 'We haven't eaten enough carrots or we must have eaten 'whiskers' cat food!'
In recent years, he retired as he had some health issues. Last year, he sold his house for under $400K and has moved yo a villa in Richmond/Windsor area. The villa was an extra $130k, of which he hadn't had the difference in funds to pay for it. What happened from here was something that has touched my touched.
Both their own children financially have dug deep into their pockets: his daughter donated her life time savings of $30K and his son went deeper and provide $100K. So they made their parents so proud to purchase and live into their new villa, making life comfortable for them. The property is in the parents name and all are living happily, pending current health issues for their parents.
I remember these children for the last 25 years, they completed their Higher School Certificate, both having success in life as worker and the other as a business person.
So here is a story where parents help children in their younger years and then children pouring out their hearts to the parents in need! Mount Druitt children do care! Charity in this case is repaid!
Where is struggle street when you need them?
