Help get life saving support to drought-affected families
The suicide rate in rural communities is double that in cities. And the stress and financial pressures of the drought are pushing even more farming communities to breaking point.
John , I recently wrote to ask if you would send a message of support to our farmers. Now I need your help to build on that powerful action by making sure our drought-affected communities have somewhere to turn when things get tough.
With the ongoing drought, many Aussie farmers feel they have nowhere to turn. I recently spoke with Alex Ferguson, Executive Director of Lifeline Central West, and he told me:
"It's confronting, watching adults cry. A lot of farmers are very much stiff upper lip, full of pride. It takes an earthquake to get them into a weakened state emotionally. But that’s where a lot of them are right now.
"The death of animals in particular rocks everybody. It destroys families. And its not only farmers. There are towns all over Australia where business has just stopped."
